Raising funds for Mt. Diablo alternative ed
"The Clarinet Fusion" choir will perform a variety of music for Mt. Diablo Alternative Education Foundation's annual fundraiser from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 30, at the Pleasant Hill Senior Center, Chateau Room, 233 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill.
The fundraiser will support the students and staff in alternative education schools and programs.
Under the direction of guest conductor Harvey Benstein, Clarinet Fusion will perform using seven types of instruments. The audience will have an opportunity to participate in a silent auction for the benefit of "Helping Students Help Themselves."

YVHS annual banquet supports sports teams
Ygnacio Valley High School's annual fundraising banquet March 22 will support its sports teams.
It will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at St. John Vianney Church, 1650 Ygnacio Valley Road, in Walnut Creek.
The banquet will be catered by Kinder's BBQ. There will be a raffle, and live and silent auctions, with opportunities for trips to Disneyland, Hornblower dinner cruise, and water skiing on the Delta, along with San Francisco Giants and San Francisco Ballet tickets and more.
Chamber offers college scholarships
The Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce is offering up to six $500 scholarships to students in the Concord area who are entering college in the 2014-2015 school year.

Student Congressional Art Competition set
High school students are invited by Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, to participate in the annual Congressional Art Competition. All high school students residing in California's 11th Congressional District can submit their work.
The competition is an opportunity for each congressional district to showcase its artistic and creative young talent. Deadline to submit artwork is April 14.
The winning piece from the legislative district will be displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. In addition, the winner and one family member will be flown to Washington D.C., courtesy of Southwest Airlines, to participate in an official reception in June.
Artwork will be featured on Miller's Facebook page and open to public judging from April 28-May 2, and will be displayed in Miller's district office, provided it is not selected as the panel's overall winner.
Artwork will be picked up by Millers's staff at the main office of the student's school the week of April 14.

Mount Diablo photo contest for students
The second annual Scholastic Photo Contest invites students in grades K-12 in Contra Costa and Alameda counties to submit their original pictures of Mount Diablo.
Photos can be of one of the Diablo parks, listed on the contest website at www.SaveMountDiabloContest.com, that showcases why the student enjoys Mount Diablo's lands and think they should be protected.
Students will be eligible for prizes, including a $1,000 Apple gift card, publishing in Diablo Magazine and inclusion in a traveling photo exhibit.
All photographs must be submitted by April 30. Winners will be announced May 12.
The contest raises awareness about Save Mount Diablo's work and encourages students to visit their local natural parks, explained public relations manager Beryl Anderson.
"This contest is a great way for us to connect with students and for students to connect with the Diablo wilderness. After all, students are the future generations we are saving these lands for and who we hope will continue to save Mount Diablo."
Host families needed for students
The International Education Center at Diablo Valley College is seeking families to host international students on a temporary basis. Long- or short- term placements are available and host families are paid a monthly stipend.
All types of families are welcome including single adults with or without children. Families may also host multiple students, as long as they can provide appropriate accommodations.
