Eagles win in NorCal quarterfinals

  • Clayton Valley Charter High's girls basketball had its excellent season continue after winning its Northern California Division II regional quarterfinal game against Lynbrook-San Jose 52-45. Kayla Taylor (22 points, six rebounds) and Hailey Pascoe (20 points, five assists) did the bulk of the scoring for Clayton Valley Charter. The Eagles played at Archbishop Mitty-San Jose in the March 18 semifinals, but results weren't available at press time. It was the first NorCal semifinals appearance in program history for Clayton Valley Charter.

    Dons baseball tops College Park

  • Zach Stromberg out-dueled College Park High ace Joe DeMers to give the Acalanes baseball team an impressive 2-0 nonleague win over the Falcons on March 15. Stromberg, a junior, scattered five hits in the complete game shutout. He got run support from Grant Henderson and Max Diaz, who each went 1 for 3 with an RBI. DeMers was 1 for 2 at the plate and, on the mound, struck out eight while allowing six hits in a compete game effort.

    Spartans, Bruecker shine on the links

  • The De La Salle High golf team won its own invitational at on March 10, edging out Archbishop Mitty, Sacred Heart Prep and Jesuit at the Diablo Country Club. Justin Nuval paced the Spartans with a third place finish, firing a 1-under 70. Acalanes' Will Bruecker was the individual champion after defeating Branson's Miguel Delgado on a three-hole playoff. Both shot a 69 on the course.

  • De La Salle at California, baseball, March 21, 4 p.m. -- The always challenging EBAL season begins this week for the Spartans.

  • Dublin at Alhambra, baseball, March 25, 4 p.m. -- The Bulldogs started the season 6-2, but the competition gets tougher in DFAL play.

  • NorCal championships, basketball, March 22, all day -- Teams will compete for a spot in the March 28-29 state championships. The Open, Division I and II games will be held at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento while Division III-V will play at American Canyon High.

    Stars of the week

  • Marquis Morris, De La Salle track and field -- Morris won both the 110-high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles at the Marsh Creek Invitational on March 15. His time of 14.65 seconds in the 110 was the best in the state so far this season.

  • Gabe Taylor, Clayton Valley Charter baseball -- The senior went 4 for 4 with two runs, three RBI and two stolen bases as the Eagles defeated Liberty 11-4 in nonleague action on March 14.

  • Kayla Taylor, Clayton Valley Charter girls basketball -- Taylor's 22 points, six rebounds and three steals helped the Eagles get past Lynbrook-San Jose 52-45 in the NorCal Division II regional quarterfinals on March 15.

  • Hailey Sparacino, Alhambra softball -- The Saint Mary's College-bound senior was 7 of 12 with six runs and eight RBI in four games to help the Bulldogs go 3-1 at the Queen of the Mountain tournament on March 15.

  • Drew Anderson, Miramonte boys basketball -- Double-doubles from the senior forward helped the Matadors earn a pair of upset wins in the NorCal Division III playoffs. He had 31 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-40 win over Fairfield in the first round, then poured in 34 points and 20 rebounds in a 78-76 win over Burlingame in the quarterfinals March 15.
