Pittsburg baseball continues winning ways

  • The Pittsburg High baseball team continued its strong start with a 3-0 nonleague win over Mission San Jose on March 22. Pitchers Joey Whipple and Sergio Bustos combined on a four-hitter as Whipple went six innings with four strikeouts and Bustos picked up his first save of the season. Miguel Macias and Silverio Ozuna each had doubles for Pittsburg, which scored twice in the fifth inning and once in the sixth as it improved to 6-2 overall with the victory.

    Freedom goes extras to beat James Logan

  • The Freedom baseball team scored one run in the top of the seventh inning and one more in the ninth to pull out a 4-3, extra inning victory over James Logan on March 22. Senior Kyle Robello went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and also pitched the last two innings to get the win. Senior TJ Briggs went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Falcons, who improved their record to 5-4 with the victory.

    Deer Valley gets big nonleague win

  • The Deer Valley boys volleyball team beat Foothill 24-26, 25-20, 25-15, 25-21 on March 20 for one of its biggest nonleague wins of the season so far. Jordan Ewert had 25 kills, 19 service points and 12 digs, and setter Jacob Evans had 49 assists as the Wolverines improved to 7-1 with the victory. Two days later, Deer Valley improved to 8-1 after it beat Grossmont-El Cajon 25-13, 25-20.

  • Livermore Stampede, April 3-5, softball -- One of the best softball tournaments in Northern California gets going next week at Robertson Park in Livermore. The 16-team event starts with round robin games on April 3 and 4, and concludes with the championship game April 5. Heritage represents the Bay Valley Athletic League.

  • Jordan Ewert, Deer Valley boys volleyball -- Ewert had 25 kills, 19 service points and 12 digs to lead to Wolverines to a four-game nonleague win over Foothill.

  • Kyle Robello, Freedom baseball -- Robello went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and also pitched the last two innings of a 4-3, nine-inning win for Freedom against James Logan in a game between North Coast Section Division I teams.

  • Elliott Smith, Freedom boys basketball -- Smith finished off a tremendous postseason and a memorable high school career with 19 points -- including a 3-pointer at the end of regulation time to send the NorCal Division I regional final game against Monte Vista into overtime -- and 14 rebounds in a 59-51 loss to the Mustangs.

  • Joey Whipple, Pittsburg baseball -- Whipple had four strikeouts in six shutout innings to lead the Pirates past Mission San Jose 3-0 in a nonleague game.
