New Oahu flights

What's old is new again: Starting May 16, Hawaiian Airlines will restore its daily flights between Mineta San Jose International Airport and Oahu/Honolulu -- just about six months after dropping the daily service and basing more Oahu service out of Oakland International.

Combined with Alaska Airlines' offerings to Honolulu, that will give travelers a choice of 11 to 14 flights from San Jose to Honolulu every week. (Alaska offers daily flights some months, four-times-weekly other months.) Both Alaska and Hawaiian fly daily from Oakland International Airport to Honolulu, giving East Bay fliers 14 options to the islands' capital.

Heading to Maui, Kauai or the Big Island? Check the Hawaiian and Alaska airline websites for current and upcoming or seasonal offerings.

Wildflower trips

All month, the Western Railway Museum's antique electric-powered trains will roll through a Solano County countryside dotted with California or golden poppies and other wildflowers. The Scenic Limited runs three times a day on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays until April 30. The Vintage Comet trips, which feature wine tastings, are on Saturday afternoons through April 26. All trips are an hour long, and the price includes museum admission. Tickets: 800-838-3006; www.brownpapertickets.com/event/509705.

(Alas, the dry winter and late rains spelled a very early end to the season of yellow at Daffodil Hill in Amador County. If you missed getting up there, put that on your calendar for next year.)
