BAY POINT -- Family-themed activities, information on health and education issues, games and free food will be offered at a community event slated for Saturday at the Ambrose Community Center.

The event will take place in an outdoor area behind the center's building.

"Everything is going to take place back there. A lot of people don't know what is there," said Pam Qualls, secretary of the nonprofit Bay Point Community All-N-One of the two playgrounds, two baseball fields and grassy area. "It's in the community, and they need to use it."

The nonprofit is co-sponsoring the event with the Ambrose Recreation & Park District.

While many people participate in multiple educational and recreational programs offered at the Ambrose Community Center on Willow Pass Road, most are not aware of the outdoor facilities, said Doug Long, the park district's general manager. So Saturday's event will also help get the word out about the outdoor area.

"The whole notion is to develop community in the park," Long said. "The more people we have in the park, the better place it's going to be."

Representatives from about 15 groups will staff tables to provide information about health, education and community issues. Blood pressure screenings will also be provided. As for food offerings, look to put away some hot dogs offset by healthy vegetables.

Bay Point Community serves as an umbrella group for seven organizations to coordinate their separate efforts into one organization. Among its services are providing Christmas toys to needy children, supporting a free community breakfast held every second and fourth Saturday at First A.M.E. Church and a weekly food-distribution program.
