NAME: Kathleen "K.T." Thomas

My favorite workout: I have always loved dance: ballet and tap as a kid and Latin dances as an adult. I tried some dance fitness programs while raising my children but was lucky to be one of the original U-Jammers when Susy C. and Matt Marks created the U-Jam Fitness program four years ago. I found like-minded individuals of all ages who love dance and a community of people who are willing to challenge themselves. In the last four years, I have improved my stamina, balance and strength substantially. I have lost weight and have more energy. More important, I am able to do this in a positive and supportive environment and have met some of the most amazing women and men focused on fitness. Susy and the other U-Jam instructors strongly encourage cross-training, and I have found U-Jammers of all ages who have joined me in exploring other fitness programs. On a side note, I met my boyfriend of two years in a U-Jam class.
HOW OFTEN I EXERCISE: I now take about three U-Jam classes a week and alternate with other forms of exercise for a total of five days of classes. I walk my Labrador almost daily.
WHAT MOTIVATES ME: I am, of course, motivated by the personal gains, but having friends to meet up in class makes me truly look forward to getting there and being the best I can be. Having my physician let me know that my weight, blood levels and overall health are good for my age doesn't hurt one little bit.
THE HARDEST PART: Getting to the 6 a.m. classes, but sometimes that's the best opportunity to learn new choreography.
WHAT IT TEACHES ME: We never need to feel alone when we work toward fitness and health goals. There is an amazing group of new fitness friends out there ready to welcome you in. It is also really important to always have fun while you exercise!
