Patriots tennis team wins BVAL title

  • The Heritage High boys tennis team completed a 10-0 Bay Valley Athletic League season, finishing the regular season with a 15-game win streak and a 16-1 overall record. The Patriots competed in the BVAL Tournament on May 5-6 after this newspaper went to press, and will compete in the North Coast Section tournament.

    Deer Valley moves into first place

  • The Deer Valley baseball team moved into first place in the BVAL with a 3-1 win over Pittsburg on April 29 and a 13-7 win over Freedom on May 1. The Wolverines (11-7, 5-1 BVAL) entered the week with a one game lead over Liberty and Heritage.

    Heritage remains perfect in BVAL

  • The Heritage softball team improved to 6-0 and increased its win streak to eight with dominating wins over Pittsburg and Antioch last week. The Patriots (14-4) shut out Antioch 6-0 on April 29 and also held Pittsburg scoreless in a 12-0 victory on May 1. Pitcher Marissa Espinoza earned both shutout victories.

  • NCS Tournament of Champions, boys golf, May 12, 8 a.m. -- Some of the top individual golfers and teams will compete in the tournament at Peacock Gap Golf Club in San Rafael.

  • BVAL Championships, track and field, May 14, noon -- Pittsburg hosts what should be an exciting league championship meet.

  • Deer Valley at Pittsburg, baseball, May 15, 4 p.m. -- Deer Valley looks to hold on to its first place standing when it travels to Pittsburg for the final game of the regular season.

  • Freedom at Liberty, softball, May 15, 4 p.m. -- Freedom, which entered this week on a three-game winning streak, looks to keep things going in the right direction in the final regular-season game for both teams.

    Stars of the week

  • Marissa Espinoza, Heritage, softball -- Espinoza pitched 13 scoreless innings and struck out 11 batters in two games last week. Espinoza entered this week with an 8-0 record and a 1.62 ERA.

  • Ashlyn Frits, Liberty, softball -- Frits hurled a four-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over Antioch on May 1. She struck out four batters and helped her own cause with an RBI single at the plate.

  • Nathan Mallett, Freedom, golf -- Mallett earned an individual berth to the NCS Tournament of Champions after shooting a 77 in the Division I Qualifier round at Diablo Creek Golf Course on May 5.

  • Kohta Zaiser, Deer Valley, baseball -- In a 13-7 win over Freedom, Zaiser was 3 for 4 day at the plate, including three RBIs. He also contributed a two-run single in the Wolverines 3-1 victory over Pittsburg.
