A story incorrectly reported some details of a proposed contract agreement between the Antioch Unified School District and its teachers union. A 4.04 percent raise effect July 1 would only apply to the contract's extra duty schedule for teachers, not their base pay.

ANTIOCH -- The teachers union and school district here have reached a tentative agreement that would provide raises and increase the district's contribution to health insurance premiums.

The proposed changes to Antioch Unified's existing three-year contract with the Antioch Education Association, agreed to Tuesday night following months of bargaining, include 2 percent raises, effective retroactively to July 1, 2013 and Jan. 1, 2014.

The district's contribution to medical benefits would cover increased costs that kicked in at the beginning of the year, meaning the teachers won't have to put raises right back into covering added expenses, said Robert Strickler, president of the Antioch Education Association.

"They'll actually get to feel like they got a raise," Strickler said. "We're happy that we settled before it stretched out. Nobody wanted to drag it on."

The contract between the district and teachers ends July 1, 2015.

Superintendent Donald Gill said keeping compensation competitive with other districts is important for stability, both for the district's program development and teachers' personal lives.

"The most important work we do is in the classroom, so it allows our teachers to focus on instructing and teaching our students," Gill said.

If approved, the contract change would reduce the ratio of students to teachers in the classroom for kindergarten through third grade to 29 to 1 next school year, and one student less each of the next two years. It also sets class size maximums for the first time, Strickler said.

If approved, the agreement also sets a limit on the number of meetings outside the contracted workday that teachers must attend and sets aside time for teachers to complete online training.

Antioch teachers will vote on the accord later this month. If they support it, district trustees will consider approving the contract at their May 28 meeting.

The two sides also reached an agreement to form a joint committee to implement new Common Core State standards in the district, along with guidelines for staff development.

The base salary scale for Antioch teachers ranges from about $37,000 to $83,000, depending on the number of years in the district and credits earned. Salary increases kick in each year based on tenure and experience.
