The Foothill High boys golf team prevailed in a sixth-man tiebreaker over Dublin and Campolindo to take the team title at the North Coast Section Division I Tournament of Champions on Monday.
The favored Falcons, Gaels and Cougars each had five-player team scores of 359 at Peacock Gap Golf Course in San Rafael, but Foothill took first place based on sixth-man John Fracisco's 4-over 75. He was one shot better than Campolindo's sixth man and three better than Dublin's.
Freshman Miguel Delgado of Branson-Ross was the medalist with a 5-under 66, one stroke better than runner-up Tanner Hughes of Foothill and Will Brueckner of Acalanes.
The top three teams, plus the top four individual finishers not on those qualifying teams, advance to the CIF Northern California tournament in Roseville on May 19. Individual qualifiers were Delgado, Brueckner, Marin Academy's Joe LaHorgue, who shot 67, and De La Salle's Joe McCarthy, who shot 68.
The 17th-ranked Cal men's tennis team (17-7) makes its fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA championship round of 16 when it plays ninth-seeded and ninth-ranked Texas (22-5) on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
The West Coast Wild, an under-16 girls team from Livermore, won the NorCal State Cup Championship on Saturday in Modesto, earning a trip to the U.S. Club National Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, on July 18-21. The Wild beat Santa Clara Sporting Green 2-1 in overtime for the state title. Coaching the Wild is former San Jose Earthquakes player Troy Dayak.
