SAN PABLO -- A local author who beat breast cancer will hold a book-signing event Sunday at Maple Hall to raise funds for research to beat the disease.

Marie Southwick, a San Pablo resident, survived a bout with breast cancer in 1989 and a mass in her chest and a brain tumor in 2004, and has long lived by her slogan, "sempre avanti," Italian for "always move ahead."

Her fundraising efforts will be part of the flea market being held by the city's Committee on Aging from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Maple Hall, 13813 San Pablo Ave., building 4.

"My primary purpose in life is to raise money for cancer research to fund a cure for this dreadful disease," said Southwick, a longtime bodybuilder, runner, and aerobics and swimming instructor.

Southwick will give out a cancer information pamphlet and her book, "The Reality of Aging and Other Issues," and sign copies, while asking for donations for cancer research.
