OAKLAND -- The University of California has appointed UC Davis professor Robert Powell as an executive committee governor for the management teams overseeing the Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos national labs.

Powell's appointment to the Lawrence Livermore National Security LLC (LLNS) and Los Alamos National Security LLC (LANS) Boards of Governors takes effect immediately, and includes chairing the LLC's Science and Technology Committee.

According to LLNS and LANS board Chairman Norman Pattiz, Powell is a highly respected senior academic leader with experience in UC-affiliated national laboratories and knowledge of the research and development capabilities of Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos labs.

A professor in UC Davis' chemical engineering and material science department, Powell replaces the outgoing William Frazer.
