ANTIOCH -- A driver picking up a student accidentally struck the boy in the elementary school's parking lot on Monday, authorities said.

The boy, believed to be 10 years old, was struck about 2:55 p.m. as class let out at Mno Grant Elementary School in Antioch, said Contra Costa Fire Capt. Robert Marshall. A miscommunication between the driver and the student led to the accident, police said.

A helicopter landed in the school's field and flew the boy to a hospital, Marshall said. His condition was considered serious.

The driver of the car stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, Marshall said.
