A TIME TO REFLECT: All Antioch graduating seniors, guests and public are invited to attend the annual baccalaureate ceremony at 7 p.m. June 1 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1360 Tregallas Road in Antioch.
According to a news release, the interdenominational celebration, which rotates among several church facilities, originates from a "medieval European custom of presenting candidates for degree of bachelor (bacca) with laurels (lauri) of sermonic oration."
The participating schools are Antioch High, Deer Valley, Dozier-Libbey, Bidwell, Live Oak and Prospects. Dr. Mario Howell, Antioch Church Family pastor, is the keynote speaker. Rev. Tom Bonacci of the Passionist Order will also speak, with Pastor Linda Vogelgesang of St. John's providing opening remarks. Principal remarks will be given by Louie Rocha (AHS), Ken Gardner (DV) and Nancie Castro (DLM).
"It is wonderful tradition that resonates so deeply with students and families," said Walter Ruehlig of the steering committee, along with Katherine Billeci and Annette Beckstrand. Call 925-756-7628.
