OAKLAND -- The Monte Vista and Bishop O'Dowd High baseball teams are accustomed to classic playoff battles and engaged in another one Wednesday.
History repeated itself for the Mustangs as they outlasted the Dragons 3-2 in 11 innings in a North Coast Section Division I playoff game. No. 9 seed Monte Vista (13-12) will face cross-town rival No. 1 San Ramon Valley in Saturday's quarterfinals.
O'Dowd and Monte Vista have met four times in the playoffs since 2000. That included a 12-inning semifinal game in 2000 won by the Mustangs and a wild 2005 semifinal in which Monte Vista beat future major leaguer Tyson Ross to spoil O'Dowd's attempt at an undefeated season.
"We've had three classics," Monte Vista coach Bill Piona said. "We've been lucky enough to come out on the right side of those."
After the Mustangs tied the game in the fourth inning on a home run by Lucas Halstead, the offenses dried up until the 11th.
Charles Zaloumis led off that inning for Monte Vista with a double and Mike Ricupito added an infield single. Brendan Landman hit a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run and Daniel Wilson drove in a run with a squeeze bunt.
The Mustangs took that 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 11th. The Dragons (16-11) got back-to-back singles by Otis Statum and David Kyriacou and Matt Achramowicz drove in a run with a fielders' choice. O'Dowd had two on with no outs, but Monte Vista's Sam Carter retired the final three batters to close out the win.
Carter pitched seven innings in relief and gave up just one run and three hits.
"I think I aged about 20 years there, but that's OK," Piona said. "Those were good years."
