LIVERMORE -- Noah Bremer came on in relief in the seventh inning to snuff out a potential game-winning rally by the Granada High baseball team. Then the senior drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth as No. 13-seeded Berkeley beat the Matadors 2-0 to advance to the North Coast Section Division I semifinals for the first time in 12 years.

With Granada's Ryan Mathia at second base with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, Bremer relieved Parker Denison and promptly retired the next three batters to escape the jam.

In the ninth, Berkeley loaded the bases and Bremer singled to left to score Bryce Bell from third for a 1-0 Yellowjackets lead. Shan Dhaliwal also singled to score David Langer.

Bremer got the first two outs in the ninth before he walked Mathia, but got Marty Proetel to fly out and end the game.

"Winning this is a really big boost for us," Bremer said. "Our mindset going into each game is play it like it's our last."

After dispatching of No. 4 California in the first round and No. 5 Granada in the quarterfinals, Berkeley will face another EBAL team, No. 1 San Ramon Valley, in the semifinals on Wednesday.

"I definitely think we're underestimated," said Bremer, who will almost certainly start Wednesday against the Wolves. "But now that we've pulled two upsets, we're a menace. And we're going to make you work. Whoever we play next, they're going to have to come with their best guy to come and try and beat us."

The game featured a terrific pitchers' duel between Granada's Turner Hartley and Berkeley's Leo Pollack. Hartley went eight innings and allowed six hits, and Pollack got out of repeated jams in his six innings, as Granada had a runner in scoring position in every inning he pitched except the first.

Pollack was helped by two standout plays by his outfielders.

In the third inning, Proetel singled to right but Dhaliwal threw out Mathia attempting to score from second base.

In the fourth inning with runners on second and third with two out, centerfielder Zachary Copeland made a nice catch to rob pinch-hitter Nick Sposeto of a base hit.
