On June 15, the San Francisco Giants and AT&T Park will host the National Pitch, Hit & Run championships. To qualify for this round, participants must first win at the local and sectional levels of the competition. Even then, placing first at the sectional level does not automatically secure a championship birth.
The top three sectional champions in each age bracket were selected to advance. Landon Wheeler, representing Delta Baseball/Softball League and Perk's Sports Academy, earned a spot in the 9-10 year old division. After winning the local competition in Antioch, Wheeler advanced the sectional playoffs in Pleasant Hill and finished with a 922, the second highest score out of all age levels. Wheeler earned the 9-10 division high score by hitting the strike zone five times in six pitches, hitting the ball over 100 feet in the air and running to a time of 8.95 seconds.
Wheeler also secured a birth to the Team Championships, which will be held on July 15 during the 2014 MLB All-Star game in Minneapolis.
