HAYWARD -- A 60-year-old man is in critical condition after an unlicensed driver struck him with a car on Wednesday evening in the city's downtown area, police said.
Officers were dispatched just before 6 p.m. to the intersection of Watkins and D streets for a report of a pedestrian that had been hit by a car, Sgt. Mark Ormsby said.
Responding officers found a man on the ground suffering from a skull fracture and bleeding in the brain. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for critical injuries but was expected to live, Ormsby said.
Police say the man was crossing the street at the intersection when a male driver struck him in a crosswalk.
The driver, who remained at the scene, did not have a license to drive or any identification and was arrested. His name was not immediately released.
