In January 2012, I slipped on some black ice and broke my ankle. Surgery, an infection and recuperating put me in the hospital, in a rest home and convalescing through June. I was just sitting at home watching TV. My weight jumped from about 240 pounds to 300.
Around Thanksgiving 2012, I decided I needed to fix things. I joined Forma Gym, which is in my hometown, and hired an amazing trainer and nutritionist, Steve Schmitt.
I worked out with Steve five days a week, doing lots of full-body movements, including dead lifts, squats and sled pushes. I also did cardio once a week.
At the time I was working at CVS pharmacy in downtown Walnut Creek, working a 1-10 p.m. shift. I asked Steve where I could get my main meal near work every day. He said I could go to Tender Greens, which specializes in serving made-to-order salads and other fresh, healthy, nutrient-rich meals. Steve designed a steak salad for me, with butter lettuce, roasted vegetables, cucumbers and a light vinaigrette. I also ate chicken for leaner protein and made protein shakes, incorporating into those many of my vegetable servings.
I'm happy to say I lost about 120 pounds by the following Thanksgiving, just by working out and eating more healthfully. I've since lost 15 more, for a total of 135 pounds. My pants size has gone down from 50 to 32, and my shirt size has dropped from XXXXL to medium. I feel like a whole new person, mentally and physically.
I've changed careers, becoming a membership consultant at Forma Gym, where I hope to help other people make changes that help them feel better mentally and physically. I'm also training for the Triathlon at Pacific Grove in September. Life is really good!
