Games against the Los Angeles Kings will bookend the 2014-15 season for the Sharks, and it appears that everything is aligned for the teams to meet in an outdoor stadium, as well.
The NHL released its upcoming schedule Sunday, and it has San Jose on the road against the defending Stanley Cup champions for the Oct. 8 opener and April 11 finale. And while the league did not identify which Sharks home game might be moved to an outdoor location, the Feb. 21 contest against Los Angeles would be a good guess.
Next month, the NHL is expected to identify at least one outdoor game beyond the Jan. 1 Winter Classic between Washington and Chicago.
The Sharks are considered front-runners for their first outdoor game, and with the emphasis on rivalries, the Kings would be a logical opponent. The Saturday date as well as the late February availability of both AT&T Park or Levi's Stadium all point to a San Jose-L.A. matchup.
Cal alumnae Valerie Arioto and Jolene Henderson and Stanford catcher Jessica Plaze earned spots on the U.S. women's national team. Arioto begins her fourth straight run with the national team. Unlike previous seasons, she'll focus on playing first base thanks to a roster of talented pitchers, including Henderson. World Cup IX is July 7-12 in Irvine, and the ISF World Championship is Aug. 12-24 in Haarlem, Netherlands.
Cincinnati announced it has signed Stanford infielder Alex Blandino to a contract for a reported $1,788,000. Blandino was the Reds' supplemental first-round pick (29th overall).
Amaranth, ridden by Dennis Carr, cruised to a seven-length win in the $50,000 Betamerica.com Oaks at the Alameda County Fair. The O.J. Jauregui-trained horse ran six furlongs in 1:10.35.
