Name: Sudha Nagarajan, 50, with Nancy Gadol, 60
City: Palo Alto
My favorite workout: Everyone knows that running is a great way to get into shape, but it also benefits almost every part of your body, as well as lifting your mood. I met Nancy 16 years ago at work. I was trying to fit in exercise with everything else -- work, home, children. For running, all I needed was a good pair of shoes. We started running at lunch and have continued the same routine since, even with Nancy now working 15 miles away.
How often I exercise: Nancy and I try to run three times a week. I alternate with other forms of exercise like kick boxing, walking, yoga and Zumba, exercising a total of five to six days a week.
What motivates me: The high after the run keeps me motivated, but having Nancy share the pain makes it even more fun. During the run, we discuss everything from science to stress at work, to the latest movies and gossip and how running keeps us young. Both of us are in clinical research, and there is data showing that running can raise your levels of good cholesterol while also helping increase lung function. Running seems to be the best form of exercise for losing or maintaining a consistent weight at this age as well. Several studies have confirmed that exercising can reverse aging. It benefits the body, mind and spirit. The high from the run keeps you going and wanting to run again!
The hardest part: Trying to get out for a run in the middle of the day. But knowing that Nancy drives 15 miles each way to run with me gives me no excuses.
What it teaches me: I'm never alone in this. Both our families are also hooked on fitness and running. You meet new people when you run on the streets or work out at the gym, and they are always ready to cheer and welcome you. Having a buddy makes it easier and so much more fun to exercise.
