RICHMOND -- It took longer than expected, but downtown institution La Perla Mexican deli is set to reopen Tuesday with longer hours and expanded options.
Susan Weinberg-Matteson, who became the new owner of the location at Fourth Street and Nevin Avenue earlier this year, said La Perla will be open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for breakfast, lunch and dinner and will feature Mexican and Jamaican food.
While plans originally called for a reopening in June, renovation work took longer than expected, Weinberg-Matteson said, adding, "I want to thank the customers for being patient."
The deli was founded by the Ponce family in 1948 and remained a favorite destination during major changes downtown. The family decided last year to sell the building and retire but continued operation until May.
Weinberg-Matteson said she will continue to offer the Mexican food that made the deli popular, adding coffee, juice, baked goods and other breakfast options in the morning and Jamaican cuisine during dinner hours.
"I hope to provide a breakfast alternative for kids who (now) go to the corner store and get a soda and a bag of chips. We want people to have healthy, affordable options," she said.
"I want to give so much respect to the former owners because they just delivered so much hospitality to the neighborhood for so long. La Perla will continue to bring good food to the community just like it's always been."
