BRENTWOOD -- When staff members of the Brentwood Library learned that the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano counties not only collected food for people, but also for pets, they decided to connect their summer reading program with an event for a good cause.
The event, called "Paws to Help," is planned for Aug. 20 and features a pet food drive.
"This year's summer reading theme is 'Paws to Read," Lindsey duPont, coordinator of the program, said. "We thought a pet food drive would be a great way for kids to help."
Earlier this year duPont found out that each month the Contra Costa Human Society goes to the Food Bank where they are provided with food for 600 families with hungry pets. She said that many of the books that are read in the library's summer program feature family pets or stories about dogs and cats.
The short 45-minute event, which begins at 4 p.m., is located across the street from the library at the Brentwood Community Center, and will allow children to give hands on help.
"People are asked to bring an unopened bag of dry, or canned food to the pet food drive," duPont said.
"Children and adults can lend a hand by scooping kibble into baggies and decorating treat bags to distribute to needy dog and cat owners."
After donating the food and helping out at the Community Center, families are welcome to stop by the Tony LaRussa's Animal Rescue Foundation van that will be parked across the street by the library to just say hello to the cats and dogs in the van or consider adopting one to take home, duPont said.
The Friends of Oakley will also be on hand at the event to raise money with their book sale items where books can be purchased starting at 25 cents each.
Each year the Brentwood Library offers a Summer Reading Festival to encourage children to pick up a book and read over their summer school break. The program offers prizes to keep the momentum going for the kids to pick up a few books through out the break.
