First fruits of grape harvest anointed

From left, Rabbi Laurence Elis Milder, of Congregation Beth Emek of Pleasanton, clinks glasses Aug. 20 at Garré Vineyard & Winery during a toast at the annual Livermore Valley blessing of the grapes with the Rev. Mark Wiesner, of St. Charles Borromeo; Chris Chandler, executive director of the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association; the Rev. Steve Wilde, of First Presbyterian Church of Livermore; Jennifer Fazio, vice president of operations at the Steven Kent Winery; and Gina Molinaro-Cardera, vice president of Garré Vineyard. The custom of blessing grapes, the first fruits of the harvest, can be traced back to Old Testament times.
