CLAYTON -- The public can join current and retired law enforcement officers who will be participating in a golf tournament Sept. 15 to benefit a nonprofit organization that assists young people in West Contra Costa in avoiding violence, drug abuse and juvenile delinquency.

The 16th annual Kops for Kids Golf Classic, to be held at the Oakhurst Country Club in Clayton, raises funds for Contra Costa Kops for Kids, a program in which active and retired police personnel work with young people considered at risk.

The program is overseen by retired Richmond police Cpl. Larry Lewis, who is also the executive director of the Richmond Police Activities League.

"We believe we are making a difference in the lives of some of these kids," he said. "Many young people don't think about the consequences of their actions until after the damage is already done."

The organization's Positive Mental Attitude Seminars and Sports Clinics Program, which are offered free to schools, reached more than 6,200 people in the greater Richmond area during the last academic year, a 300 percent increase from a year earlier.

The Kops for Kids Youth Mentoring Program provides grants for officers who provide guidance for youths.

The organization also sponsors activities and outreach such as a dirt bike clinic in Richmond; youth basketball, football, track and soccer teams; the Richmond High School Kiwins, Richmond Police Explorers and the Tae Kwon Do Center in El Sobrante; and violence-prevention seminars at Contra Costa College in San Pablo.
