OAKLAND -- A man arrested last week in Las Vegas has been charged in the fatal shooting May 25 of an acquaintance in East Oakland, authorities said Wednesday.

Demara Hatch, 35, was charged Wednesday with murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm in the killing of Jay E. Hansen, 30, who was slain outside his apartment in the 2800 block of Nicol Avenue.

Hatch, who has three prior felony convictions for battery with serious bodily injury, second degree burglary, and possession of a controlled substance, is being held in Las Vegas pending extradition to California.

Hatch was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Las Vegas on Aug. 27.

Sgt. Eric Milina, the lead investigator in the case, said when Hatch was interviewed in Las Vegas he initially denied being in Oakland at the time of the killing, but later said he was present when the shooting happened but was not the gunman.

Hansen, the father of three children and a student at San Francisco State University, was shot about 1:29 a.m. May 25 outside his apartment after returning home from a downtown nightclub. Milina said the shooting followed a dispute of some kind between Hansen and Hatch.

Milina said witnesses identified Hatch as the gunman soon after the killing.
