Information meeting on earthquake readiness
Prompted by the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Napa, the El Cerrito Fire Department is holding a special community meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Arlington Clubhouse, 1120 Arlington Blvd.
El Cerrito Fire Department Battalion Chief David Gibson will lead a discussion on preparedness and what to do and not to do in the event of an earthquake or other disaster. A brief presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer period on earthquake preparedness and response.

4-H chapter holding informational meeting
A meeting to learn about the new 4-H Club in El Cerrito will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 9 in the library at Korematsu Middle School (formally Portola Middle), 1021 Navellier St.
The agriculture-based youth development program, which has more than 90,000 chapters nationwide, is open to children ages 5 to 18 and has goals of helping participants to build confidence, learn responsibility and make positive decisions.
Adult volunteers who pass background checks can participate as project leaders.

Registration opens for Albany Triathlon
One of the highlights of Albany Local Week is the annual triathlon in Memorial Park. This year's Albany Community Triathlon is from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 at the park, 1325 Portland Ave.
The event, which is open to all skill levels from beginner on up, encourages physical fitness and raises funds for Albany School District sports programs. The entry fee is $45 for the event, which consists of a quarter-mile swim (17 pool lengths), a 6-mile bicycle ride and a 2-mile run around the park and school campus. More than 100 community athletes participated last year.
Organizers note that it is also "an opportunity for participants to work up an appetite for Dinner with Albany that evening."

Evening concert series continues in Albany
The 11th annual Music in the Park series of free evening concerts takes place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday in September on the lawn at Memorial Park, 1325 Portland Ave. in Albany.
Country honky tonk band Red Meat is the featured performer on Sept. 10.
The series continues with local bluegrass favorites Bangers & Grass from Albany and El Cerrito on Sept. 17 and Quinn DeVeaux and the Blue Beat Review, described as "the fusing of gospel, blues and country music, forming something altogether unique" on Sept. 24.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket to spread on the park lawn and a picnic to enjoy during the show.
Citizens police academy registration opens
Enrollment is expected to fill quickly for the next El Cerrito Police Department Citizens Academy, which will meet on Monday nights starting Sept. 8 and running through Oct. 13. The course will also include a Saturday session on Oct. 11.
"Attendees will learn about the K9 program, the CSI Unit, Detectives, Bicycle Patrol and the Volunteer Program. Also included is a training class on the Use of Force Simulator and the Driving Simulators."
Participants, who must be El Cerrito residents 18 or older and pass a background check, will also have the chance to go on a police patrol ride-along.

Club hosting final endorsement forum
The final November election endorsement forum being held by the El Cerrito Democratic Club is at 6 p.m. Sept 23 at Zion Presbyterian Church, 545 Ashbury Ave., and will feature candidates for Kensington Police Protection and Community Services District and the Kensington Fire Protection board. Hiking group holding Albany Hill outing
Explore Albany Hill at the El Cerrito Trail Trekkers first Sunday hike at 4 p.m. Sept. 7.
