FREMONT — Two men arrested last week after a noninjury drive-by shooting in Newark have each been charged with a felony.
San Leandro resident Angelo Vincent Roberto was charged Monday with unlawful discharge of a firearm, and Newark resident Samuel James Fox was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Roberto has been released from custody on $60,000 bail, while Fox remains incarcerated at Santa Rita county jail in Dublin in lieu of $30,000.
Both men, who are 20, were arraigned at the Fremont Hall of Justice on Monday and are expected to return to court this week to possibly enter a plea.
Newark Officer Pat Smith, a K-9 handler, detained both men early Friday after stopping a speeding vehicle near Wells Avenue and Ash Street, authorities said. While questioning the occupants, identified later as Roberto and Fox, he learned there were several .45-caliber shells and a map to a house on St. Matthew Drive inside their vehicle, police said.
Further investigation revealed that the home shown on the map had been fired upon several minutes earlier. Responding officers found several spent shell casings and a .45-caliber handgun in the street in front of the home. Both men then were arrested on suspicion of weapons charges.
No one in the home was struck by gunfire, but one bullet traveled through a wall and hit another wall on the other side of the residence, police said.
