Some facts about the Half Moon Bay giant pumpkin weigh-off.

--The first contest was held in 1974. John Minaidas of Half Moon Bay won with a 132-pound pumpkin. In 1984 the winner weighed 612 pounds. In 2001 grower Steve Daletas from Oregon was the first to crack 1,000 pounds at the contest with a pumpkin weighing 1,016 pounds.

--Portola Valley grower Eric Carlson won the "prettiest pumpkin" award for the fourth time Monday with a bright orange, 380-pound Atlantic Giant called Eye Candy. For this category, Carlson aims for pumpkins that are about 40-45 days old, before they get so big their skin starts to "canteloupe," or become visibly rough.
