They did the Mash.
Our monthlong Monster Mash contest, which started out as a field of 32 ferocious fiends, was a delightfully ghoulish game — where only the strong survived.
Freddy, Jason, Jaws, Alien, Chucky and dozens of other top contenders entered the ring. But, eventually, we were left with just two standing — all-time heavyweights Godzilla and King Kong battling it in out in the final.
Now, well, the king is dead.
Godzilla is officially the Greatest Monster of All Time. And it wasn't even close. Godzilla, who had been dominant throughout the competition, received some 80 percent of the popular vote in the final.
We'd like to thank all the readers who voted online to determine the eventual winner. It was a fun round of five and, while we didn't always agree with the selections, we wholeheartedly endorse your decision to crown Godzilla as the champ.
You certainly can't knock the Lizard King's credentials.
Since making his debut nearly 60 years ago, in his self-named 1954 Japanese film, Godzilla has remained one of the world's most popular (and easily recognizable) monsters. He's appeared in some 30 films, as well as in TV shows, comic books and novels, and survived confrontations with such killer creatures as Mothra, the Smog Monster, the three-headed Ghidrah and, yes, King Kong — in the 1962 film "King Kong vs. Godzilla." (He once even battled Bambi, in 1969's twisted cartoon short "Godzilla Meets Bambi" — but probably the less said about that the better.)
In hindsight, we now realize that the title of his first film said it all — "Godzilla, King of Monsters." Now, voters have confirmed that Godzilla is indeed the greatest of them all.
Happy Halloween and, as Blue Oyster Cult once said, "Go Go Godzilla!"
