1. Born 43 years ago in Waco, Texas, Hargrove was always obsessed with the trumpet. As a boy, he practiced in the closet, so as not to disturb his mother.

2. A visit by saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman to Hargrove's junior high school was a major inspiration. The young trumpeter was amazed by the spontaneity and melodiousness of Fathead's playing.

3. At Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, Hargrove was friends with future R&B singer Erykah Badu. They were in the same biology class.

4. In addition to maintaining his successful jazz career, Hargrove has a funk/R&B band (the RH Factor) and has recorded with R&B and hip-hop artists including Badu, D'Angelo and Common.

5. As he was mentored by such jazz greats as Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis and John Hicks, Hargrove now mentors the young players in his quintet: pianist Sullivan Fortner, bassist Ameen Saleem and drummer Quincy Phillips. (Justin Robinson, 44, is the band's saxophonist.)
