BERKELEY -- The Berkeley High boys soccer team continued to affirm its position as one of the top teams in the East Bay, and as the top team in the West Alameda County Conference, with a 3-2 league win over visiting Hayward on Wednesday night.

Nigus Solomon scored twice and Calvin Wright scored once for Berkeley, which has won eight straight and is unbeaten in its last 11 contests (9-0-2).

"We're on a roll right now and we hope it continues," Solomon said. "Each goal is really important. The more goals the merrier, and we just want them to keep coming."

Berkeley took leads of 2-0 and 3-1, but the Farmers didn't go away. Esteban Mares scored in the 57th minute to cut Berkeley's lead to 2-1, and Luigi Castillo's header in the 70th minute made it a one-goal game again after Christian Mendoza's free kick deflected off the crossbar.

Berkeley's victory improved its record to 10-1-3 overall and 6-0-1 in league play. Hayward dropped to 9-3-1 and 4-2-1 in the WACC.

"We could have put our head down, but we didn't," Hayward coach Alex Ortega said. "We kept fighting and I'm proud of the boys for that."
