LAFAYETTE -- Robbie Stern had four goals and four assists for the host Acalanes High boys lacrosse team, which beat Piedmont 17-6 on Wednesday in the North Coast Section Division II semifinals.
The Diablo Foothill Athletic League champion Dons will now host Marin Catholic on Friday at 7 p.m. as it seeks its second straight Division II title.
Drummond Thompson made 14 saves in a gallant effort for the Highlanders (18-4), who were outshot 48-13 on the night.
"It has been our goal every year," Stern said of advancing to the final. "DFAL champs first, then move on to NCS. It's the third time in the last four years we've played Marin Catholic in the championship game. Hopefully, we'll be ready to go on Friday."
Acalanes (20-3) beat Marin Catholic last year in the championship game, 9-8. In 2011, the Wildcats beat the Dons, 8-7. In both cases, the teams were seeded first and second and in both cases, the second-seeded team won. This year, Acalanes is No. 1 and Marin Catholic is No. 2.
Piedmont actually scored the first goal Wednesday, with Theo Williams taking a pass from Sean Dickson for a goal just under 100 seconds into the game. Acalanes responded with four in a row, with Stern scoring the first on a pass from Jack Mariani.
Vinny Gladden then scored to give the Dons the lead for good, followed by Nathan Brickman (on a pass from Grant Jackson) and Mariani.
Sam deRoque scored three goals for Acalanes. Mariani and Adrian Jeffries each finished with two goals and two assists.
One key for the Dons was winning the coin clip. That allowed them to choose ends, and they put Thompson facing the sun on the south end zone. Acalanes scored seven times in the first quarter, taking a 7-2 lead. By the time the second quarter started, with Cameron Bosshart in the same goal, the sun had set.
Piedmont ended up with six goal-scorers. Quinn Burnett had a goal and an assist, as did Peter Lally.
De La Salle 12, Redwood-Larkspur 8: Shutting out Redwood in the final period while scoring five consecutive goals to end the game, the Spartans upset the top-seeded Giants (14-7) in the NCS Division I semifinals. Andy Evans, Brook Rideau and Doug Strazza scored two goals apiece for the fifth-seeded Spartans (12-7), who play San Ramon Valley in the championship game Saturday.
