HAYWARD — Police are searching Memorial Park for a transient who reportedly raped a woman walking her dog on the park trail.

The woman reported the crime at about 1:15 p.m. today, and police began searching the lower section of the trail, Hayward Police Lt. Reid Lindblom said. Police dogs and a helicopter are being used in the search.

The woman said the rape had occurred about 15 minutes earlier, near the trailhead at 24176 Mission Blvd., behind the Hayward Plunge and near All Saints Cemetery, Lindblom said.

Police said the assailant was described as a white man in his 30s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds, with brown hair and about three to four days' beard growth. The woman believed her attacker was a transient, Lindblom said. He noted that the woman was not otherwise injured, but he had no further details.

Memorial Park is a narrow greenbelt with a hiking and riding trail that starts behind the Hayward Plunge swimming pool on Mission Boulevard and follows a creekbed up the hillside.
