AFTER A YEAR hiatus, a group of guys who have been friends since their days at Hayward High School got together the last weekend in September for their annual Boys Weekend Away.
The guys — Scott Christiansen, Scott Clare, Mike Engeldinger, Scott Paulsen, Dwight Roberts and Royce Valencia — have been getting together for the past 24 years to play golf, tennis, Frisbee golf, go fishing and relive their high school "glory days."
The brethren, now all over 50, have tamed a bit, but nonetheless, the gatherings continue.
This year, the six decided to combine a few of their favorite activities and add a new one — sightseeing.
Day one was spent on the Riverbend Golf Course in Madera, where Valencia, a two-time blind bogie champ, went on to win with a low net score of 66. Clare had his best start ever, only to finish with a career low gross of 84.
On day two, all six jumped into a king cab pickup truck to go to Yosemite National Park. They saw the trickling Bridalveil Falls, El Capitan, Half Dome and enjoyed lunch at the Ahwahnee Lodge.
On day three, they got in some early-morning fishing at Bass Lake, but alas, even though they used a GPS fish finder, the wise lake bass avoided capture. The fishing was a disappointment, but the good news was that there would be plenty of time for relaxing and watching NFL games on the TV.
Next on the agenda was the annual business
This year, the awards were dedicated to "Hair Styles." Engeldinger won the award for the nicest color; Valencia won the finest and thinnest award; Clare got thickest and bushiest; Christiansen, most forehead; and Roberts won the award for the best someone else's hair.
The meeting ended with an update on everyone's health and family, and then plans were made for 2010's 25th annual Boys Weekend Away.
Day four brought the weekend to a close. All agreed to put the 2010 date on their calendars, and to focus on working harder in the coming year in their respective businesses.
