A warehouse fire Thursday in Hayward sent thick plumes of black smoke and the smell of burning plastic across parts of the city.
Twenty-seven firefighters fought the blaze amid temperatures in the 90s, said Battalion Chief George Silva of the Hayward Fire Department. The fire was knocked down a little more than an hour after it was reported at 5:45 p.m., he said.
The blaze started in an alleyway on National Avenue near Clawiter Road and quickly spread south to Alpine Way. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The warehouse in which the fire started stored recycled computer parts. Silva said heat may have factored into the fire's quick spread.
"Plastics burn fast. That's why there was so much smoke," he said.
There was no significant structural damage to the buildings on National Avenue, but the roof of the building on Alpine Way was damaged.
