It was only fitting that the Monarchs would dominate the HAAL tournament on Thursday at Tennyson as well. Mt. Eden collected three individual titles, three second-place finishes and as many thirds. They earned nine berths in the North Coast Section tournament, which starts on May 17 at Newark Memorial.
Top seed Nicole Lo defeated No. 2 Denisse Cordero 21-11, 21-17 in the girls singles final to give Mt. Eden its first championship of the day.
The Monarchs' duo of Henry Wong and Nathan Lo was pushed to the limit in the opening game by San Leandro's Tony Lau and Curtis Gee.
Wong-Lo won the first game in a nail-biter 22-20, then ran away from Lau and Gee in the second game, 21-10.
The mixed doubles final was an all-Mt. Eden affair, as No.1 seed Fanny Yu and Sherwin Samson squared off against No.2 Alisa Huynh and Billy Yu.
Huynh and Yu made a huge statement by winning the first game 21-16. Yu and Sansom showed why they are the ones to beat, rallying to take the second and third games 21-11 and 23-21.
In one of the most competitive matches, Phil Nguyen (Hayward) and Baltazar Noyola (Mt. Eden) met in the semifinals of the boys singles.
Nguyen won the first game 21-11, but Noyola won the second game 21-18. Trailing 20-19 in the decisive game, Nguyen scored the
Nguyen faced unseeded Henry Tran of Mt. Eden, who knocked off top seed Carl Dalmacio (Moreau Catholic) 21-18, 21-13 in the other semifinal match.
Tran fell to Nguyen 22-20, 21-15 in the finals.
Despite the loss, Mt. Eden coach Gary Duran was delighted with Tran's performance.
"He's a senior who's never been to NCS, so I wanted to give him an opportunity to go by putting him in singles, and he played awesome out there today," Duran said of Tran, who played doubles all season.
Castro Valley's Ingrid Wong and Chanele DeRosa won the girls doubles championship, beating the Monarchs' Yvonne Duong-Huyen Nguyen 21-9, 19-21, 21-14.
Duran was quick to praise his whole squad for another outstanding performance, both in the championships and throughout the season.
"Everybody played really well today, and they've been playing great all season long," he said.
