Local hero receives award. The Harlem Globetrotters awarded San Ramon fifth-grader Alexa Hile Lewis with the Junior Phenom award for her heroic work that helped her mother in a time of need. When her mother became nauseous and had trouble breathing, Alexa picked up the phone and managed to stay cool and composed when she dialed 911. Her swift action helped her mother receive the medical attention she needed within minutes. Alexa was recognized as Honorary Captain at the team's Summer Skills clinic held last week in San Ramon.
Rotary Club of Livermore Announces Grants -- Organizations receiving funding: National Alliance on Mental Illness Tri-Valley was awarded $750 for NAMI Educational Classes, increasing free educational classes for families and looking into programs such as Ending Silence, a presentation at high schools addressing students about mental illness, specifically suicide prevention. Livermore Heritage Guild, Livermore, was awarded $500 for project Child's View of 19th Century Livermore. Funds used to purchase a computer monitor or viewing the project at the Heritage Guild Museum, and provide intern stipends for developing content. Will Rasor of Granada High School, Livermore, was awarded $825 for project AP Environmental Sciences Lab Materials, Will is starting an AP Environmental Course at Granada High.
Livermore announces Volunteer Honors -- Jessica L. Powershas been chosen as the Livermore Library's Volunteer of the Year. As a volunteer for the library since 2011, Jessica assisted in the planning and implementation of the library's first teen writing club, presented her new books at several author talks and held several writing workshops for teens and adults.
Tom Leonard has been chosen as the Livermore READ Project Volunteer of the Year. Tom joined the READ Project in September 2001. He has worked with eight students since then and he has approached each tutoring experience with dedication and patience.
Lindsey Murray has been chosen by the Friends of the Library as their Volunteer of the Year. President Janice Diane commended Lindsey for her cheerful service to the public in the Friends Bookstore and her willingness to help with book donations and sales.
