WATSONVILLE -- Freedom Elementary School reading teacher Pamela Gerk-Rivas couldn't stop thinking about the horrific killings at a Connecticut school last week and trying to figure out how to respond.
Last Friday's tragedy also was on the mind of the Rev. Robin Mathews-Johnson, who decided to honor the victims by granting Gerk-Rivas' request for help with a donation to a school literacy project on behalf of her congregation at Watsonville First United Methodist Church.
"When I opened your email, it brought tears to my eyes," Gerk-Rivas said Thursday as a school delegation stopped by to say thanks. "I felt it made us closer as a community."
The $306 donation will pay for 120 subscriptions to Scholastic Weekly Reader for students in kindergarten and first grades.
Gerk-Rivas hopes others in the community will step up and donate as well so students in upper grades can get subscriptions.
