ESL enrollment Monday
The Santa Cruz Adult School is having an English as a Second Language Enrollment Fair from 9 a.m. to noon and 6-8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28.
Participants will be able to meet the staff, teachers, register for classes and enter to win prizes. Refreshments will be served. Child care will be available.

PCS opens lottery applications
Lottery applications are now being accepted for grades 7-12 at Pacific Collegiate School, at 255 Swift St., for the 2013-14 school year. The application deadline is March 7 and the lottery will be 5 p.m. March 21.

Twin Lakes Christian School will open it's doors to parents of prospective kindergarteners 9-10 a.m. and 7-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28.
Parents will gather in Monschke Hall in building 700 where the principal and teachers will present an overview of the school and it's kindergarten program, and answer questions.
Then, at 7 p.m. Feb. 5, the school will host a Middle School Vision Night.

Registration is under way for middle and high school students in Santa Cruz City Schools for the 2013-14 school year.

Spelling bee planned at Green Acres
Green Acres, at 966 Bostwick Lane, is hosting its annual Spelling Bee for fourth and fifth graders at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30 in the library.
The top two spellers will progress to the County Spelling Bee Feb. 23 at UC Santa Cruz.

'Miss Representation' screening Thursday
Gateway School is hosting a screening of Miss Representation from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31.
Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the 90-minute film highlights the main-stream media's contribution to women's under-representation in positions of power and influence in America. After the screening, Lucie Hemmen, a Santa Cruz author, psychologist and former Gateway parent will lead a discussion.

Mock SAT planned Saturday
Soquel High School is offering a Mock SAT test provided by Revolution Prep 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 in room 120. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m.
The cost is $10, with the money staying with the high school. Scholarships are available by talking with Branna Banks in the counseling office.
Participants will receive their score online, with a score report that provides a detailed performance analysis, including personalized feedback on the essay.

Young women flex their harmony
Two members of Scotts Valley High School's chorus recently spent a day in San Mateo participating in the Sweet Adelines, Region 12, Young Women In Harmony workshop.
Janine Snyder and Nikki Olivas, of Beth Hollenbeck's chorus, received coaching from Sweet Adelines master teachers and prominent quartets before performing for the region 12 convention. With only a few hours of actual rehearsal, the girls received a standing ovation.
The Sweet Adelines youth outreach programs are supported by the Gold Standard Barbershop Chorus of Santa Cruz.

West Africa the topic at Spring Hill
Seventh and eighth graders at Spring Hill School are spending this trimester learning about West African culture, history, literature and current events.
Recently, the youths learned a dance that depicted social patterns and values through movement.
"The dance I chose was about the earth's cycle of giving and receiving and giving praise to the earth for all the good things it supplies," said Angelic Navarro, drama and dance coach.

Kindergarten registration begins
Registration for kindergarten at schools in the Live Oak School District begins Wednesday, Feb. 6.
Students must be age five by Oct. 1 to be able to attend the 2013-14 school year.
Prospective families can contact the school nearest their home to verify attendance boundaries and set an appointment to register their child.

College scholarships available
The Community Foundation is offering nine scholarships to students seeking higher education.
Awards, paid for with money from local donors, range from $750 to $2,000 and are based on a variety of academic and non-academic factors. The scholarships are renewable.
Last year, the nonprofit give $34,000 to eight local students.
The application deadline is midnight, Sunday, Feb. 24.

The annual fashionTEENS fashion show is accepting applications from youthful designers.
