NEWARK -- In memory of former football coach and athletic director Rich Swift, the flags at Newark Memorial High and the Newark Unified School District office will fly at half-staff through Friday, district superintendent Dave Marken announced in a release.
A memorial service for Swift will be held March 10 at the Newark Memorial Event Center at 2 p.m.
The district also plans to set up a fund to annually hand out the Rich Swift Scholar-Athlete award each spring at the school's awards night. Donations can be made in Swift's name at the district office or Newark Memorial.
Flowers or remembrances can be brought to the flagpole at the district offices. Swift died Wednesday, eight days after he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.
Some have suggested naming the football field at Newark Memorial after Swift, the only football coach in the school's history.
Marken acknowledged that in the release and said, "The Board policy gives the governing board criteria in naming facilities. Please allow ample time for each of us to properly grieve and reflect."
