LIVERMORE -- Marylin Avenue Elementary School has been honored by state and federal officials for carrying out programs that provide healthy lunchtime meals to school kids while encouraging them to take part in physical exercise.

It is one of 697 schools in California and 6,545 schools nationwide that have met the certification requirements of the Healthier U.S. School Challenge awards. In the Bay Area, 12 schools in Oakland, 11 in Pittsburg and five in the West Contra Costa district were also honored with the award.
