San Ramon-based Chevron and Pleasanton-based Safeway have teamed up to provide a new fuel loyalty program for retail customers of both companies.

Initially, the program will launch in Southern California. Chevron is teaming up with Safeway unit Vons. Los Angeles, San Diego, Fresno and Bakersfield counties are among the early locations.

"We feel this is the right program at the right time with the right partner," said Cary Knuth, general manager of marketing, sales, and services for Chevron Americas Products.

The new loyalty program will allow Vons customers to earn points for select products bought at Vons and redeem them in the form of a 1-cent-per-gallon savings at all participating Chevron and Texaco stations.

"Gas and groceries are two critical and frequent purchases consumers makes," said Mir Aamir, president of customer loyalty & digital technologies with Safeway.

Energy titan Chevron and supermarket giant Safeway intend to expand the program in the near future.

"Partnering with Chevron to create a program that offers our customers savings at the pump was a natural fit," Aamir said.
