CINCINNATI -- Down to their last shot, the Giants will turn to a pitcher who has been waiting his whole life for a chance like this.
"It's amazing for me," Ryan Vogelsong said Monday, in preparation for Tuesday's Game 3. "But I said this to you a couple of days ago, it's not about me at this point. It's about the team and what's best for us."
For manager Bruce Bochy, Vogelsong was the option that would be best for Game 3. The resilient right-hander bounced back from a tough stretch to give up just one earned run in his final three starts.
"I think the way Ryan has been throwing the ball his last couple of starts, he's been on with his command, his "stuff" and we like where he's at right now," Bochy said.
Reds starters against Vogelsong:
Phillips: 7 for 14
Cozart: 0 for 6
Votto: 1 for 6, 3 BB
Ludwick: 4 for 5, 2 RBI
Bruce: 4 for 12, HR, 3 RBIs
Rolen: 4 for 10, HR, 6 RBIs
Hanigan 2 for 6
Stubbs: 3 for 13, 5 strikeouts
Homer Bailey threw a no-hitter in September but wasn't guaranteed a postseason start. With Johnny Cueto ailing, the Reds now expect him to be a key postseason contributor, starting with Game 3.
"In these situations, every game is important," Bailey said. "We're in a good spot, but every game at this stage of the season is big."
Bailey found out in the middle of Game 1 that he would start Game 3, and immediately flew home to eliminate the possibility of jet lag.
"It actually worked out good," he said. "I threw a regular bullpen that day and stayed on my regular rest anyways, so no excuses, right?"
