CINCINNATI -- Suspended outfielder Melky Cabrera was reinstated Friday by Major League Baseball, but the Giants announced that his status with the club remains unchanged.
Cabrera was added to the 40-man roster but will not be activated. His 50-game suspension for use of a banned substance ended when the Giants won Game 5 of the National League Division Series on Thursday.
Cabrera was suspended Aug. 15. In his absence, the Giants ran away with the West Division title and stunned the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the postseason. They announced in September that Cabrera would not return this season.
To clear room on the 40-man roster, the Giants outrighted outfielder Justin Christian and reliever Shane Loux to Triple-A Fresno's roster.
