Before they attempt to defend their World Series title, several Giants cornerstones will vie for a different championship. Pablo Sandoval, Ryan Vogelsong and Sergio Romo were among the Giants named to provisional rosters for the World Baseball Classic on Thursday.

Sandoval is one of three Giants on the roster for Venezula, along with Jose Mijares and Marco Scutaro, who previously had indicated that he would not play. Asked about the World Baseball Classic in December, Scutaro said he preferred to "save the bullets" for the regular season.

Romo was another player whose status was up in the air, but he has long expressed his desire to represent Mexico in the international tournament.

Vogelsong and Jeremy Affeldt will represent Team USA and Angel Pagan and Javier Lopez are on the roster for Puerto Rico. Santiago Casilla is slated to pitch for the Dominican Republic, a team that will include former Giant Melky Cabrera. Minor league catcher Tyler LaTorre will represent Italy.

The semifinals and championship of the WBC will be played at AT&T Park on March 17-19.
