SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Andres Torres pulled out of the World Baseball Classic because of an oblique injury, and Jose Mijares is also likely to skip the showcase event.
An MRI showed that Torres, who had been battling side soreness for several days, has an oblique strain. Manager Bruce Bochy said Torres is expected to miss about a week of spring training. Torres had planned to play in the same Puerto Rico outfield as Angel Pagan.
Mijares remains on the Venezuela roster, along with Pablo Sandoval and Marco Scutaro. But the left-handed reliever felt elbow discomfort Wednesday while facing the Los Angeles Angels and almost certainly will not be able to pitch for his home country. Mijares gave up two runs on three hits in an inning of work. He will be re-evaluated Thursday afternoon.
Even with the withdrawals, the Giants are slated to have eight players participate in the WBC. Players will begin leaving camp this weekend to join their respective teams.
