SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- In one of the largest spring training roster cuts in recent memory, the Giants trimmed 21 players on Friday, including promising outfielder Gary Brown.
The large cut gets the Giants' spring roster down to 38 players. Two of those players, infielder Brett Pill and left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp, are injured and not factors for the Opening Day roster, so the club essentially has 11 more cuts to make.
Reassigned to minor league camp were right-handed pitchers Brett Bochy, Boof Bonser, Steve Edlefsen, Heath Hembree, Mitch Lively, Shane Loux, left-hander Michael Kickham, catcher Tyler LaTorre, infielders Ricky Oropesa, Adam Duvall, Brock Bond and outfielder Brown. LaTorre had just rejoined the team Friday morning after his stint with the Italian team in the World Baseball Classic ended.
Optioned to Triple-A Fresno were right-handers Jake Dunning, Chris Heston and Dan Otero and left-hander Sandy Rosario, along with infielders Ehire Adrianza and Nick Noonan and outfielders Roger Kieschnick and Juan Perez.
Left-handed pitcher Edwin Escobar was optioned to Class A San Jose.
Eighteen pitchers, five catchers, nine infielders and six outfielders remain in camp, counting Pill and Surkamp.
