TORONTO -- Melky Cabrera thought the Giants were going to ship his World Series ring to Toronto. As it turned out, the actual presentation was nearly that discreet.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy handed Cabrera his ring Tuesday afternoon when the two met in a tunnel between the clubhouses at Rogers Centre. When Bochy gave Nate Schierholtz his ring last month, he did so on the field during batting practice. But Cabrera didn't want to get his ring on the field.
"He requested a private deal," Bochy said. "That was up to him."
Bochy and Cabrera met for about a minute while the Giants took batting practice. Bochy said Cabrera gave his old manager a hug and thanked him and the Giants organization.
Cabrera was suspended for use of a banned substance last summer and was not added to the postseason roster when eligible. Still, there are no hard feelings between the Blue Jays' outfielder and his former teammates; several met with Cabrera while the Blue Jays took batting practice on Tuesday.
Cabrera declined to speak to reporters.
