PITTSBURGH -- George Kontos turned 28 on Wednesday, but this is one birthday the right-hander will want to forget.

Kontos was optioned to Triple-A Fresno in the afternoon and replaced by Sandy Rosario.

As he headed for the minors, Kontos found out that he had been suspended three games and fined an undisclosed amount for beaning Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen on Tuesday night. Kontos will serve his suspension whenever he returns to the majors.

Manager Bruce Bochy was also suspended one game and will sit out Wednesday's game against the Pirates. Bench coach Ron Wotus will manage in Bochy's place.

Kontos had a 5.76 ERA for the Giants and gave up three runs Tuesday before being ejected. He took the demotion well, saying he would gain confidence in Fresno and be back soon. Kontos insisted that he is healthy and has not succumbed to mechanical problems.

"I think this can be a quick fix," Kontos said. "I'll go down there and get right."

Despite the demotion, suspension and fine, Wednesday wasn't even Kontos' worst birthday. He tore an elbow ligament on his 24th birthday and had to have Tommy John surgery.
