Sometimes it helps to just put things out there in blunt terms. Like this: 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 4, 2, 1. The Giants' run totals over the past eight games.

Here are a couple of other ones: 9 for 79 with runners in scoring position over the past 11 games . . . 1 for 19 with runners in scoring position in two days at Coors Field, and the one hit didn't score a run. The Giants keep tipping their caps to the other starters, and Franklin Morales does have good stuff. But Ross, Stults, Erlin, De La Rosa and Morales ain't exactly the St. Louis Cardinals rotation.

The worst part about the collective slump is that it has come at a time when the Giants should be taking off thanks to their pitching. Here's another set of numbers: 2, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 8, 2. The opposing run totals. The pitchers are doing their job.

On Tuesday, Madison Bumgarner went above and beyond, blitzing the Rockies in the late innings. That's two 2-1 losses in a row for Bumgarner, and Tuesday's was a tough one to swallow. Not many pitchers throw a complete game at Coors Field, give up two runs or fewer and lose. In fact, only two have ever done it, Bumgarner and Jason Jennings.

"He was phenomenal," Hunter Pence said. "He's so crucial to this team and he's given us a chance to win pretty much every time we go out there."

Said manager Bruce Bochy: "Bum pitched great, did a real nice job. A complete game, two runs in this ballpark -- that's a nice effort . . . "

It was also another very bitter loss for a team that has had four of them on a five-day trip.
